Women's Vulval Skin Conditions
Skin conditions affecting the vulva are common but are often under-recognised or mistaken for infections such as thrush. Many women experience persistent itching, burning, pain or skin changes for months or even years before receiving the correct diagnosis.
At Mermaid Beach Dermatology, our Specialist Dermatologists have experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of vulval skin conditions. We understand that these symptoms can be distressing and may affect comfort, sleep, exercise, sexual health and quality of life.
Early diagnosis is important, as many vulval skin conditions respond well to treatment and prompt management may help prevent long-term complications.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
No. While thrush is common, persistent itching is often caused by inflammatory skin conditions such as lichen sclerosus, eczema, psoriasis or contact dermatitis. If symptoms continue despite treatment for thrush, specialist assessment is recommended.
-
There is currently no cure for lichen sclerosus, but it can usually be controlled very effectively with prescription treatment. Ongoing maintenance therapy and regular follow-up help prevent flare-ups, scarring and long-term complications.
-
Yes. When prescribed and monitored by a Specialist Dermatologist, topical corticosteroid ointments are safe and are the first-line treatment for many vulval inflammatory conditions, including lichen sclerosus. Using too little treatment is often a greater problem than using too much.
-
A biopsy is not required for every patient. However, your dermatologist may recommend a biopsy if the diagnosis is uncertain, symptoms are not responding to treatment, or there is concern about precancerous or cancerous changes.
