  • What is allergic contact dermatitis?

    Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when the immune system develops sensitivity to a substance that comes into contact with the skin. Once sensitised, even small amounts of the allergen may trigger an itchy, inflamed rash.

    Common allergens include:

    • Hair dye ingredients

    • Rubber chemicals

    • Adhesives

  • Who should consider patch testing?

    Patch testing may be recommended for patients with:

    • Chronic eczema

    • Recurrent dermatitis

    • Dermatitis that does not respond to treatment

  • How is patch testing performed?

    Patch testing involves applying carefully selected allergens to the skin, usually on the back.

    The patches remain in place for 48 hours and are then removed. Further readings are performed several days later because allergic reactions commonly take 48-96 hours to develop. Positive reactions appear as localised areas of eczema at the test site.

  • What allergens are tested?

    Every patient receives a baseline series of common allergens, which identify the majority of allergy-causing substances. Additional allergens may be added depending on:

    • Occupation

    • Hobbies

    • Personal care products

    • Medical history

    • Location of the rash
